A Killeen Police Department patrol officer spread a little Christmas cheer to the Killeen Animal Shelter Wednesday, donating food, blankets and other items.

Officer Tanya Lawson collected more than 900 pounds of dog and cat food over the course of a month, and delivered it to the shelter this morning. In addition to the food, Lawson also dropped off food storage containers, blankets and bleach the shelter uses to clean. The donations came from other police officers, local firefighters, friends, family and even a few strangers, Lawson said.

The shelter currently houses between 100 and 110 animals, according to shelter staff. Lawson said she has adopted four of her own pets from the shelter.

"I've volunteered here, and I've adopted pets from here," said Lawson, who has been with the department for two years. "I wanted to give back and help."
