COPPERAS COVE — Krist Kindl Markt will close the downtown area this weekend for vendors and shoppers to share a traditional market experience for Christmas.

“(Krist Kindl) is very unique, because it is an outdoors (arts and crafts) market in December,” said Betty Price, president of the Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau.

The chamber puts the market on every year in the area of Avenue E and Main Street, with room for more than 100 arts, crafts and food vendors.

“So far we have 70 vendors,” said Liz Sherman, the chamber’s tourism director. “We have vendors from Scentsy to Christmas decorations, to western wear, to all different types of jewelry. We have some people that will be selling Bulldawg items and others that will be selling professional sports teams’ scarves.”

In previous years, more than a few thousand people have come to Copperas Cove to shop at Krist Kindl Markt, Price said.

Tasha Roberts, owner of Babies ’n’ Things downtown, said she has prepared for the market for several months anticipating a large crowd.

“People are just out and about, so they just pop in to see what is in the store,” she said. “A lot of people that didn’t know we were here stopped by and realized what we have to offer.”

The store is a consignment and resale shop for baby items.

This year, Roberts is bringing former New Orleans Saints player Charles Grant to sign autographs, footballs, pictures and Saints gear. She also is giving away 50 food baskets that will contain either a turkey or ham.

“(The baskets) will be raffled off, but it is a free raffle,” she said. “We will be giving away so many baskets per hour and if we call your number, then you can pick up your basket.”

Giving the baskets away is Roberts’ way of giving back to the community for the holiday season, she said.

Krist Kindl Markt isn’t just about shopping and selling, Price said. The chamber wants the festival to generate that Christmas spirit for the greater community.

There will be Christmas decorations, Christmas lights, performances from school groups, a Christmas parade and other holiday festivities.

There is also a Kris Kindle Mart at the front of the PX, with the Pet Pawty on the south entrance. These both have numerous vendors and are Fri-Sat 9 - 5
