LAMPASAS — The city will be colored with red, white and blue Monday as residents and businesses pay tribute to military veterans.

The long-awaited unveiling of the Lampasas County Veterans Memorial takes place Monday on the southwest corner of the Lampasas County Courthouse lawn. Traffic around the courthouse will be rerouted from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The dedication ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Highlights of the ceremony include bands, flags and a variety of honorary speakers.

Veterans of Foreign Wars commanders from Lampasas, Kempner and Lometa formed an alliance earlier this year to create the memorial, and American Legion Post 277 in Lampasas agreed to take on the project.

The 2-ton black granite, polished and inscribed monument stands more than 4 feet tall, with six bronze emblems mounted in the granite base representing the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine service branches.

Committee members wanted the memorial to be placed at a site where current and future generations can gather to remember and honor veterans.

Free cake

Walmart in Lampasas will observe Veterans Day by handing out cake to customers starting at 10 a.m., store manager Reagan Britton said. That evening, the community is invited to attend the “Tribute to Our Veterans, Past and Present” ceremony, hosted by Walmart, at Badger Field. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., and the free event includes an “all-American” meal with hot dogs, Coca-Cola and apple pie.

A guest from the Wounded Warrior Project, military service members and dignitaries are expected to speak at the ceremony.

Other community groups involved in the celebration include an honorary color guard, local Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, the Lampasas High School band, Hymns of Praise, Church of the Hills praise team choir. During the ceremony, Vision Lampasas will release the name of the winning artist of the Vision Lampasas mural project. Walmart is at 1710 Central Texas Expressway.
