Eleven candidates vying for local council and school board seats in the May 11 election are expected to attend a political forum Friday in Killeen.

TaNeika Driver-Moultrie, president of the Killeen Branch NAACP, said the event was planned to encourage local residents to vote.

“On the state and local level, that is where their voice is really heard,” Driver-Moultrie said. “This is the opportunity to have that one-on-one time with the people who will be their voice in government.”

The event begins at 6 p.m. Friday in room 150 of the Killeen Community Center, 2201 E. Veterans Memorial Blvd.

Driver-Moultrie said she expects all five Killeen City Council candidates, four Harker Heights City Council candidates and five candidates in the Killeen Independent School District Board of Trustees races to attend the debate.

In Killeen, Mayor Pro Tem Michael Lower and incumbent Terry Clark will vie for the District 3 council seat.

District 1 Councilman Wayne Gilmore and District 2 Councilman Jose Segarra are running unopposed, and KISD teacher Steve Harris will run unopposed for the Killeen District 4 council seat.

Unopposed candidates are expected to attend the forum, Driver-Moultrie said.

Donald Lee Erik Sandlin, Stuart McLennan III and Harrel Schiffman are running for Place 1 on the Harker Heights City Council. Mayor Pro Tem Pat Christ will run unopposed for the Place 3 seat.

In the Killeen ISD election, Lan Carter will face off against incumbent Shelley Wells for Place 1 seat on the KISD board and local business owner John Gilmore will vie for Place 2 against incumbent Susan Jones. Corbett Lawler is unopposed for re-election to the Place 3 seat.

Questions from the audience will be screened by moderators and facilitators.

The event is sponsored by NAACP, the League of United Latin American Citizens chapter 4535, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
