The deadline for candidates to withdraw their names from the May 6 Killeen City Council ballot expired Friday with all 13 candidates remaining in the race.
There was an instance of confusion Thursday when Hilary Shine, the city’s director of public information, informed the Daily Herald that District 1 candidate Holly Teel had requested to withdraw from the race. An article reporting the withdrawal was posted online, but Teel called late Thursday to say she had requested the formal paperwork to withdraw but had not filed it with the city.
The article was pulled from the Daily Herald website, and Teel said Friday she would remain in the race.
The candidates can still withdraw from running in the election from here on out, but their names will appear on the ballot.
The candidates by seat and stated profession are:
Incumbent Councilwoman Shirley Fleming
Kenny Wells, laundry owner
Holly Teel, dog trainer and handler
Debbie Nash-King, graduate student
Larry Smith, contractor
Incumbent Councilman Jim Kilpatrick
Patsy Bracey, retired registered nurse
Vantonio Fraley, VL Coaching Unlimited founder and coach (write-in)
Hal Butchart, retired military
Incumbent Mayor Pro Tem Brockley Moore
Steve Harris, teacher and coach
Ralph Cossey Jr., software engineer
Stanley Abrahams, corrections officer
Fraley, who is running for District 3, is a write-in candidate because his voter registration status could not be confirmed by the election filing deadline Feb. 17.
