Killeen police Thursday identified the 21-year-old pedestrian struck and killed by a vehicle traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 190/Interstate 14 early Wednesday morning.
Officers responded to a call of a crash involving a vehicle and pedestrian at 6:39 a.m. on U.S. 190 near the Trimmier Road exit.
Upon arrival, officers found Tariq Allen lying in the roadway, police said.
A preliminary investigation showed Allen was walking northbound across 190 when a driver in a black Dodge Journey traveling eastbound in the center lane saw Allen in the road and suddenly braked.
Police said a white Jeep Patriot traveling behind the Dodge Journey took evasive action and veered toward the inside lane to avoid a collision with the Dodge and collided with Allen as he was walking across the lane.
Allen was transported to Carl R. Darnall Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke at 7:19 a.m.
The Killeen Police Department said it is a violation of the law to cross a controlled-access highway, and pedestrians need to use walkover bridges.
