COPPERAS COVE - A man who police arrested on a charge of possession of a controlled substance died shortly after while in police custody, according to a news release sent by Sgt. Lester Nace with the police department.
On Sunday, at 9:09 p.m., officers arrested Justin Smith-Washington without incident, and charged him with possession of a controlled substance. Smith-Washington was found in possession of cocaine, according to LT. Brian Wyers.
When officers arrived at the police department headquarters, they found that Smith-Washington vomited on himself and was going in and out of consciousness, according to the release.
Emergency medical staff was called to the scene and Smith-Washington was treated while taken to Metroplex Hospital in Killeen. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Since he was transported to the hospital before he was booked, an arrest affidavit was not prepared, Wyers said.
Copperas Cove investigators and the Texas Rangers are investigating the incident, according to the news release. An autopsy was ordered at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas.
"We are in the early stages of this investigation and additional information will be released as it becomes available," Nace said in the release.
