The name of the pedestrian struck and killed by a vehicle while crossing U.S. Highway 190/Interstate 14 Tuesday was released by Killeen police.
Wayne Clarke, 56, of Killeen, was found lying on the eastbound side of the road after police responded to an auto-pedestrian collision call at 5:57 a.m.
A preliminary investigation revealed Clarke was walking north across the highway when he was struck by a maroon Dodge pickup truck traveling east in the center lane just before the W.S. Young Drive exit, police said.
The male driver told officers he saw a dark silhouette in the road and was unable to avoid striking the man.
The driver was the only occupant in the vehicle and was not injured.
Killeen police spokeswoman Ofelia Miramontez did not clarify whether the driver was cited in the incident.
Bell County Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced Clarke dead at 6:37 a.m.; an autopsy was ordered.
