The pedestrian who was struck and killed by a vehicle Sunday on Central Texas Expressway has been identified as Adell Zachary Jr., 58, of Killeen.

At approximately 8:20 p.m. Sunday, Killeen police were dispatched for a welfare concern for a male walking on the service road near the Willow Springs Road exit on Central Texas Expressway, police said.

Around 8:21 p.m., officers were advised of a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in the 1500 block of West Central Texas Expressway.

Police said the preliminary investigation showed Zachary was walking westbound in the inside lane when he was struck by the Sentra, which was traveling in the same lane.

Zachary was transported to the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood where he was pronounced dead at 10:15 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke.

Police said in the investigation is ongoing.

It’s not the first time a pedestrian has been fatally struck or seriously injured by a vehicle in the Killeen area in the past six months. On Sept. 20, police found Tariq Allen laying in the roadway on U.S. Highway 190.

A preliminary investigation showed Allen was walking northbound across 190 when a driver in a black Dodge Journey traveling eastbound in the center lane saw Allen in the road and suddenly braked. Police said a white Jeep Patriot traveling behind the Dodge Journey took evasive action and veered toward the inside lane to avoid a collision with the Dodge and collided with Allen as he was walking across the lane. Allen was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

On May 18, Wayne Clarke, 56, of Killeen, was found dead on the eastbound side of the road after police responded to an auto-pedestrian collision call at 5:57 a.m. A preliminary investigation revealed Clarke was walking north across the highway when he was struck by a maroon Dodge pickup truck traveling east in the center lane just before the W.S. Young Drive exit, police said.

A 44-year-old fugitive named Darrel Glen Kees was hit and seriously injured by multiple cars while crossing 190 in an effort to evade from police on March 18.

Two people were hit while trying to cross South Fort Hood Street on Oct. 30, and one of those two, a 28-year-old man named Kelley Johnson, severely injured his leg.

A woman operating a motorized wheelchair was struck by a pickup truck and seriously injured in September at the intersection of Young Avenue and Fourth Street in Killeen. | 254-501-7567
