The Jasper Road bridge that goes over U.S. Highway 190/Interstate 14 was shut down for several hours Friday after a westbound truck’s cargo hit the overpass.
No injuries were reported, although a westbound minivan was struck was by falling pieces of concrete, Killeen police said in a news release.
The overpass on Jasper Road was closed from about 12:15 p.m. to about 5 p.m. The highway below was to remain closed for inspection in the early evening, according to a news release from police Cmdr. Alex Gearhart.
It reopened about 6 p.m., police said.
Engineers from the Texas Department of Transportation were sent to inspect the bridge.
About 12:20 p.m., emergency crews were seen responding to the incident, which police said was caused by a construction excavator being hauled by a tractor-trailer.
Westbound lanes of the highway were diverted to Central Texas Expressway, which created congestion near the Trimmier Road intersection all the way to Fort Hood Street, police said. The city of Killeen on Facebook said the traffic backup extended all the way to W.S. Young Drive. Several minor crashes were reported related to the congestion.
Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety inspected the tractor-trailer and excavator. The driver of the vehicle was cited for multiple violations including an overweight and overheight load, Gearhart said in a news release.
