Police: Killeen woman, 23, dies after three-vehicle crash on Stan Schlueter Loop

A 23-year-old Killeen woman died from injuries sustained in a three-vehicle collision Thursday on Stan Schlueter Loop, police said.

Maria Clarissa Aro Tabonares, a 2014 Shoemaker High School graduate, was pronounced dead at 5:22 p.m. Thursday at Scott & White Medical Center in Temple, Killeen police Cmdr. Alex Gearhart said in a news release late Friday.

About 3 p.m. Thursday, Tabonares was in a BMW in the inside lane of Bunny Trail, along with a GMC Envoy in the northbound middle lane, attempting to turn left and west onto Stan Schlueter Loop.

A Nissan Xterra heading east in the outside lane ran a red light as the BMW and GMC entered the intersection, witnesses told police. The BMW’s driver’s side door was struck by the front of the Nissan, causing Tabonares’ car to spin and hit the driver’s side of the GMC, the release said. The Nissan and BMW had major damage.

The drivers of the Nissan and GMC were not identified in the release, and their conditions were not available.

Tabonares was first taken to Seton Medical Center in Harker Heights, and then flown to Temple, police said.

One minor injury was reported from another driver, who denied medical transport. The other driver was not hurt.

The crash is under investigation, police said.
