When legendary astronaut John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth in February 1962, Elzie L. Jones was a new military enlistee serving at boot camp in San Diego.

“I was in the Marine Corps when that happened, and the drill instructors made us all come outside and stand at attention, and salute,” Jones, now 75, recalled recently.
