COPPERAS COVE — A three-year dream of giving families something to do in the Copperas Cove and Lampasas area finally came to fruition.

Maks Family Fun and Event Center had its first day of business Thursday, and is planning its grand opening for Easter weekend.

“Killeen has some things to do” for children and families, said Sarah Allis, Maks event manager. “But Cove and Lampasas don’t have much. ... This facility is for all children, even the 80-year-old children. It is about giving them a healthy place to go.”

Located just after Big Divide Road on U.S. Highway 190, the Maks features laser tag, more than 30 arcade games, a laser obstacle course, an ultraviolet light minigolf course, party rooms and an event room with more to come.

The facility was originally supposed to be batting cages, because the owner Makayla Barbee’s granddaughter didn’t have anywhere to practice softball, Allis said. Since then, the project grew to what it’s now, and the batting cages are still planned.

The outdoor portion of the fun center has yet to be completed, but it should include batting cages, a water wars station and a 2-acre go-cart course, Allis said. The business is hoping to have some of those features finished by August.

We want to be somewhere “folks are coming to have a good time,” said William Allis, Maks facility manager.

Several other arcade games, including multiple pinball machines, should be added to the facility too, he said.

Barbee wanted a place for her grandchildren to be entertained, which is why she started the design of the facility three years ago, and Maks is going to use that as a mantra for business.

“We are a family-oriented business and we will remain so” as we grow, Allis said.
