A Killeen man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the aggravated sexual assault of an 11-year-old.

Judge Joe Carroll of the 27th District Court sentenced Michael Allen Blankenship, 35, on Thursday.

According to the arrest affidavit, Blankenship sexually assaulted the victim many times over the course of three years. The girl described the abuse as getting worse as time progressed; the last instance occurred on March 1, 2008.

He told police that he "couldn't say" whether he had sex with the victim because he had no memory of it. He did, however, describe one sexual encounter with the girl.

Blankenship was discharged from the Army after his indictment.

Aggravated sexual assault is a first-degree felony that is punishable by 25 years to life in prison.
