BELTON — A Bell County jury handed down a 50-year prison sentence to a man convicted of sexual assaulting a 7-year-old girl in 2003.
The jury deliberated for about 50 minuets before handing down the sentence to Angel Luis Martinez, 35, of Puerto Rico, on Wednesday.
Martinez was convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 years old, a first-degree felony, by the same jury Tuesday.
During the trial, jurors heard from several witnesses, including the victim — now 17 — who told them Martinez placed a pillow over her head as he sexually assaulted her in her bed.
Jurors also heard testimony from the victim’s mother, as well as medical professionals and the Killeen police detective in charge of the investigation, which occurred after the victim reported the rape in April 2012.
Speaking Wednesday, Bell County Assistant District Attorney Michael Waldman said Martinez will not be eligible for parole until he has served at least 25 years of his sentence.
