COPPERAS COVE — Police continue to investigate after a 28-year-old man was killed on railroad tracks downtown Thursday morning.

A Burlington Northern Santa Fe conductor contacted Copperas Cove police about 4:30 a.m., saying the train may have run over a body on the tracks, according to a news release.

On scene, officers located a body beneath railcars on the tracks between First and Main streets.

Justice of the Peace John Guinn pronounced the man dead later Thursday morning and ordered an autopsy from the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas to aid the police investigation, he said.

The man's name was withheld Thursday, pending notification of his next of kin.

BNSF Railway is conducting its own investigation, said Joe Faust, a spokesman for the company. He didn't want to speculate on why the incident occurred.

"The lead locomotive was camera equipped so we will get a good review of what actually happened," Faust said.

BNSF Railway follows the Federal Railroad Administration guidelines, when it comes to speed and obeying posted limits, he said.

But even with the regulation, he said residents should never trespass on train tracks and mentioned the incident didn't happen at a rail crossing.

"A train has no place to swerve, and traveling at speeds of 50 miles an hour, it takes a mile to stop," he said. But he noted he didn't know the posted speed limit for trains in downtown Copperas Cove.
