BELTON - A Bell County grand jury Wednesday returned an indictment against a Killeen man accused of severely injuring a 3-month-old child by strangling her with a plastic toy ring.

Andrew James Adkison, 22, was originally charged with injury to a child, a third-degree felony. The grand jury indicted Adkison on a more serious level of the charge, injury to a child with serious bodily injury, a first-degree felony carrying the possible penalty of life in prison.

District Attorney Henry Garza said the nature of the injuries the infant girl sustained in early January were severe enough to cause permanent damage to the child, though he did not elaborate on the condition of the child today.

According to a police report, police arrested Adkison after meeting with Scott & White Hospital staff Jan. 5. They reported the child had numerous injuries, including a skull fracture, a brain injury and abrasions to her neck.

Adkison initially denied causing the child injuries, telling police the child fell under her own volition. He then told police he had been holding the infant when his dog entered the room and caused him to drop the child, the report states.

After receiving reports from hospital staff, a detective interviewed Adkison. After several denials, Adkison admitted injuring the girl because he was not receiving adequate help from the child's mother, the report states.

Adkison has remained in Bell County Jail since Jan. 7 on $500,000 bond.
