A Killeen man who caused a three-hour standoff with police is now behind bars at the Bell County Jail.

Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin arraigned William Shane Hicks Jr., 19, Tuesday on charges of aggravated robbery, evading arrest and making a false report to police officers.

Hicks is accused of robbing the Family Dollar in the 1600 block of South Fort Hood Street at gunpoint Sunday night.

Hicks barricaded himself inside an apartment in the 2300 block of Andover Drive after a brief foot chase, according to police. Killeen police's special weapons and tactics team surrounded the apartment for more than three hours until Hicks surrendered to police peacefully.

An arrest affidavit states Hicks used a .25-caliber handgun to rob the Family Dollar. He entered the store, pointed the gun at a female clerk behind a register and demanded money.

She opened the register and Hicks took an undisclosed amount of cash. He then fled on foot, the affidavit states.

A few hundred yards away from the store a police officer spotted a man jogging down Westover Drive who matched a police description of the suspect.

The officer told the man to stop, but he ran off toward an apartment complex. An officer pursued the man, who was later identified as Hicks, on foot to the apartment where the standoff occurred.

As officers surrounded the apartment, Hicks made a call to emergency dispatchers to make a report of a shooting on the north side of Killeen. Police determined the emergency phone call had been made by Hicks in order to divert their attention from him, police spokeswoman Carroll Smith said.

Once apprehended, Hicks confessed to the robbery, the affidavit states.

He also gave police the location where he abandoned the gun and clothes used in the robbery, which investigators later found.

His bond has been set at $108,000 for the three charges against him.
