The man who pointed a gun at a woman walking down the street and then barricaded himself in his home, causing a 9½-hour standoff and the closure of four schools, pleaded guilty Monday to burglary of a habitation and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Judge Joe Carroll of the 27th District Court will sentence Karim Kim Gay on July 28 following a pre-sentence investigation. About 7:20 a.m. Sept. 9, Gay walked outside of his home in the 2800 block of Bluejay Drive in Killeen and pointed an AR-15 semiautomatic assault rifle at a passing woman, causing her to run on the cement and injure her knee.

Gay, 27, returned inside and, as Killeen police's Special Weapons and Tactics Team surrounded the home, fired three shots that killed three dogs, a pitbull, a Chihuahua and a chow mix.

Children walking to school ran when they heard the shots. He fired about 20 times total throughout the day, causing frantic calls to 911 from his neighbors and the lockdown of four schools. Gay walked outside with a gun in hand many times during the standoff but always rushed back inside. Gay refused to leave the home he shared with his parents for nearly 10 hours. He surrendered at 5 p.m., hands raised, unarmed and smiling.

Gay stole the rifle from a home burglary on Bluebonnet Drive early that morning.
