BELTON - A Killeen man was sentenced Tuesday to two years in prison for beating a man unconscious with a metal pipe and pieces of a barbecue grill.
Judge Fancy Jezek of the 426th District Court sentenced Darrice Travis Ned, 28, for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
On Jan. 25, police were dispatched to an assault at a Motel 7 in Killeen. There they found a bloody 46-year-old man with lacerations to his head. Near him were a pipe and pieces of a grill covered in blood. He was in and out of consciousness and had a very faint heartbeat, according to the arrest affidavit.
Witnesses reported seeing two suspects who had beaten the man enter Room 135. In that room, police found a woman and two men, including Ned, who had blood on the fingers of his left hand and his clothing. The woman told police she saw the men attack the victim.
Jezek also sentenced Brian Antonio Grate, 40, of Killeen, to five years in prison for a 2000 incident wherein he beat his girlfriend with a rock.
On May 14, 2000, police were dispatched to a Killeen residence where Grate, who had left the scene, had assaulted his girlfriend. The woman had to be hospitalized for the injuries she sustained to her forehead, lips, hands and arms. She reported that Grate threatened to kill her.
