KILLEEN  — The only type of horse power on display at the Killeen Rodeo Arena on Saturday was several monster trucks weighing in at more than 10,000 pounds a piece.

Monster Truck Entertainment’s Monster X Tour brought two shows to the arena featuring the Rock Star, California Kid, hunting-themed truck Bucked Up, American Graffiti, a 1935 Chevy pickup truck and the Reverse Racer.

Together, the trucks raced, competed in obstacle courses and performed an array of tricks, getting attendees riled up and on their feet cheering for more.

More than 300 monster truck enthusiasts of all ages filled the bleachers cheering loudly for their favorite trucks.

“They are awesome and loud,” said Jimmi Miller, 8. “I like to watch them crush cars and do tricks.”

Before the first truck ripped through the muddy arena, monster truck lovers were able to get up close and personal with the trucks and their drivers. Some even got a chance to take a spin around the pit in the Bone Crusher.

“I like to interact and mess with the kids,” said 10-year driver Bill Payne of Straight Up Racing.

“They always ask me how I get inside, and I tell them I have a jet pack that I strap to my back.”

His ride, the Rock Star, boasts 66-inch tires — a monster truck requirement — is 12 feet high and weighs more 12,800 pounds.

For many of the attendees, the event was a family affair.

“This is kind of like a belated birthday gift and a great way to spend time with my family,” said Jess Wright, a College Station resident. “This goes back to when I was kid playing with my toy cars, and now I get to see what I imagined as a kid happen in real life.”

This was the group’s first time in Killeen. Up next is Laredo. For more information on the tour, go to www.monsterxtour.com.

I went to the 7:30 showing and I loved it. I have never been to a monster truck show before in my life, so for my first time being at one it was pretty fun.
