HARKER HEIGHTS - Incumbent Sam Murphey easily won re-election to his Place 2 seat on the Harker Heights City Council on Saturday, taking more than 85 percent of the vote.

According to unofficial election results, Murphey received 591 votes, beating 25-year-old challenger Moshe Schrauth, who received 95 votes.

"I'm grateful to the citizens of Harker Heights for allowing me the opportunity to continue for three more years," said Murphey, after hearing the results around 7:30 p.m. in front of the Recreation Center.

Incumbent Councilman Spencer Smith won Place 5 unopposed, receiving 617 votes.

In total, more than 696 ballots were cast in early voting and on election day, said Patti Brunson, assistant city manager.

Voters in Harker Heights also cast ballots in the Killeen Independent School District election.

"I appreciate everyone coming out to vote," she said, adding this was a pretty average election turnout for the city. "Everything went smoothly."

Murphey, 67, said he is looking forward to working on some of the council's ongoing infrastructure projects during his next term.
