The Killeen Branch NAACP is hosting a free health fair to help bring awareness to childhood obesity.

The event, “Fight Childhood Obesity: Get Moving,” is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Tabernacle of Praise Worship in Killeen.

“We want to make sure the children aren’t couch potatoes while school’s out,” said Val Richard, health chair for the local branch. “We want them to eat right and stay out of fast-food restaurants.”

To keep kids active and entertained, the fair features jump roping, face painting, games and contests. Attendees also can get their body mass index taken and see where their health stands.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 18 percent of children and young adults ages 6 to 19 were considered obese in 2010.

“It will benefit the parents as well as the kids if we educate the kids about this epidemic,” Richard said. “The schools are cracking down (on obesity), so why can’t the community come together and work on this?”

Richard said children need to spend less time indoors playing video games and watching TV and more time outdoors.

“Let’s (encourage) them to exercise,” she said.

The problem of obesity is most common problem seen in many people’s all over the world and the best way to reduce it, is by increasing the physical work percentage. Now a day's people hate to do physical work due availability of sources easily and this is the main reason of obesity. Now it is also seen in children that's really sad [sad]
