The identity of the inmate who died in Bell County Jail on Wednesday morning was released Thursday afternoon as Steven David Evans, 60, of Mobile, Ala., said Lt. Donnie Adams, spokesman for the Bell County Sheriff’s Department.

Relatives were located Wednesday night in Alabama, Adams said.

Temple police arrested Evans Tuesday on possession of marijuana charges after officers went to a civil problem in the 900 block of South 17th Street.

Since jail staff knew about some of the man’s medical issues and his substance abuse history, he was kept at intake so jail employees could better observe him, Adams said Thursday.

He was not taken to the infirmary.

He collapsed just after 6 a.m. Wednesday after saying he was sick.

After several CPR attempts, he was pronounced dead at 7:45 a.m. by Justice of the Peace Don Engleking, who ordered an autopsy. Evans was arrested by Temple police several times in 2010, twice on misdemeanor charges and once on a felony robbery charge.

He was convicted of all charges.

He spent time in prison, and was discharged from the Department of Criminal Justice in Huntsville on Aug. 2.
