NOLANVILLE — City Council members voted to waive fees for the Richard E. Cavazos Elementary School PTO’s use of the J.W. Sims Community Center and its requested road permits.

Amy Salas, president of the Cavazos PTO, asked council members to waive the fees so they can hold quarterly meetings at the center and prepare for the first Cheetah Dash 5K fundraiser, slated for 7 a.m. Nov. 9 at the elementary school, without paying for permits.

“We want to hold our meetings at a later time than the school will allow us to and we are hoping to be able to use the community center,” she said.

The council approved her request with the stipulation that their agreement be on a year-to-year basis and that she reapply to use the center again in June.

Salas hopes moving PTO meetings to the community center will generate more participation from parents. Salas said since it is a nonprofit organization, not having to pay the $100 fee for the center will allow PTO funds to be put to better use at the school.

In addition to new business, council members heard monthly reports from public works, animal control, ordinance enforcement, the police department and Central Bell County Fire and Rescue.

Police Chief Gary Kent also presented certificates of appreciation to Cortez Collision; CenTex Truck and Trailer; Hollie Witten, the department’s administrative assistant; officers Michelle Cortez and Antonio Liendo; and Reserve Officer Jacob Jospeh Hummer. Kent also pinned a new full-time officer, Frank Paino and a new reserve officer, Benjamin Shaw.
