Nolanville Mayor Charlie Lee Stewart was arrested Friday on a sexual assault charge.
Stewart, 58, remained in custody in Bell County Jail Friday night with bail suggested at $500,000. A charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child is pending with the Bell County District Attorney's office, and he is scheduled to be arraigned this weekend.
Nolanville police arrested Stewart about 2:30 p.m. Friday at his residence. He was then taken to the county jail.
Police Chief Gary Kent did not comment on the specifics of the case but said the alleged victim was a child younger than 14.
Stewart is the city's second elected official to be charged with sexually assaulting a child in less than a year.
Former Councilman Miguel Aviles, 57, was arrested Sept. 28 on two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child. Aviles pleaded guilty April 16 and was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
Stewart was narrowly elected mayor in May 2010. A month later, the council publicly reprimanded him for using a city-wide cleanup as a means to dispose of prohibited demolition materials.
