The Bell County District Attorney's Office formally charged Nolanville Mayor Charlie Lee Stewart, 58, with aggravated sexual assault Monday.

Stewart remained in Bell County Jail with bail set at $500,000.

Nolanville City Manager Stephen Pearl said Stewart is still the mayor of Nolanville, though his duties have temporarily been transferred to Mayor Pro Tem Brenda Huckaba.

The city's charter only allows for a mayor to be removed from office for a "crime of moral turpitude" after the official has been convicted. However, Stewart could be removed from office if he fails to attend three consecutive city council meetings.

Pearl said he has not had any contact with Stewart.

The Killeen Independent School District also placed Stewart on administrative leave Monday, pending administrative action. Stewart worked as a campus technologist at Manor Middle School.

The district also is cooperating with Nolanville Police Department's ongoing investigation, KISD spokeswoman Leslie Gilmore said.

Police arrested Stewart Friday afternoon. An arrest affidavit was not available Monday; however, NPD Chief Gary Kent said Friday that the charge involved a victim under the age of 14.

Stewart has served as mayor since 2010. He is the second member of the city's elected government to be charged with sexually assaulting a minor in the past year.

Former councilman Miguel Aviles was arrested Sept. 28 on two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child. Aviles pleaded guilty April 16 and was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
