COPPERAS COVE — Fort Hood officials and a preliminary autopsy report identified on Monday a man who killed himself outside Cinergy Cinemas last week.
Chad Lane Williams, 28, of Little Rock, Miss., died June 29 from a gunshot wound to the head, according to an autopsy report by the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.
An initial report by the Copperas Cove Police Department stated Williams' injury was self-inflicted and the autopsy report confirmed that finding.
On Friday, police officers were dispatched to the parking lot of the theater in the 400 block of Constitution Drive about 1 p.m., according to a news release from the police department.
Officers found Williams lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. Police were reportedly notified by a passer-by of the incident.
Fort Hood officials said Monday that Williams was an Army sergeant.
Williams entered active-duty service in October 2004 as a combat engineer and arrived at Fort Hood in September 2009, according to a Fort Hood news release. He was assigned to 2nd Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, since November 2010.
Williams deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom from January 2005 to January 2006, August 2006 to November 2006 and April 2008 to May 2009.
His awards and decorations included the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, three Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, two Iraqi Campaign Medals with campaign stars, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Mobilization Device, Combat Action Badge and Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver-Tracked Vehicles.
Foot Hood said the incident still is being investigated.
