A statewide initiative that supports veterans and family members by providing information about local services launched its new website Monday.
"The old site was running on a really old content management system," said Perry Jefferies, TexVet initiative manager. "We wanted to update our site to make the information more relevant and user-friendly."
The new site features interactive maps, which allow users to browse events within the area.
"You can still search (for specific events), but now, even if you're not sure what you're looking for, you can see what else is around," he said.
The website, an initiative of the Texas A&M Health Science Center, also makes it easier for partners to enter content and events.
There are about 400 groups that post events and information on the site.
"Most nonprofit organizations offering services to military, veterans and families in Texas can be found at TexVet," according to a news release. "It is the prime connector for the Military Veteran Peer Network, a network of hundreds of trained volunteers helping veterans across the state."
Jefferies said anyone who aims to help Texas military and veterans is approved as a partner and can post information about events and resources to the site.
The organization currently is working on a mobile site, expected to launch by the end of the year.
The more veterans and family members who see the resources available on the new site, the more people will be helped, said Jefferies.
