A small group of parents attended a Copperas Cove Independent School District meet-and-greet Friday morning for coffee and the chance to bring their questions and concerns to the district’s leaders.

“I applaud you for being involved in your children’s education, and in your children’s lives,” Superintendent Joseph Burns told the group. “That’s something that’s missing in a lot of kids’ lives today.”

Burns and Deputy Superintendent Rick Kirkpatrick fielded questions on topics ranging from textbook availability and technology to the best way to communicate with school staff. Kirkpatrick also gave parents a presentation on the district’s plans and goals to expand and enhance career, vocational and technical education programs.

“Education needs to change to meeting the changing needs of the job market,” Kirkpatrick said.

“Our goal is to prepare students for that next step, whether that’s going right into the workforce, or to Central Texas College ... or to a four-year university.”

Friday’s event was the first of four question-and-answer sessions the district plans to host this the school year, Cove ISD spokeswoman Olga Peña said.

John Emerson, a parent who attended Friday’s session, said being an involved parent and communicating with the district is critical to helping children succeed.

“Parental involvement is the key,” said Emerson, who has three children in the school district. “Parents and (the district) need to keep each other accountable.”
