A pedestrian was struck by a car and killed on U.S. Highway 190 in Killeen on Wednesday.

A silver Ford Mustang traveling in the outside lane of U.S. Highway 190 East, near the intersection of W.S. Young Drive, struck Warren Keaton Cook III, 20, of Killeen, at 4:20 p.m., according to the Killeen Police Department.

“Witnesses said the victim was standing on the side of the road and ran in front of the car for unknown reasons,” said Carroll Smith, spokeswoman for the Killeen Police Department.

Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin pronounced Cook dead at 5:18 p.m., according to a release from the police department. No autopsy was ordered at the time.

The accident halted traffic on the highway for hours, creating a Christmas Day jam on an otherwise slow day.

Police closed the eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 190 at the Trimmier exit through the W.S. Young exit.

Bystanders gathered in the Applebee’s parking lot near the scene of the fatality, as police officers investigated.

On the Killeen Daily Herald’s Facebook page, readers were saddened by the news of the Christmas Day fatality, and commented on the dangers of that area of U.S. 190, which is under construction for a widening project.

“There should be no pedestrians in that area,” Jimmy Lopez Stewart wrote. “What a very sad story this Christmas Day.”
