A backpack filled with chemicals commonly used to make methamphetamine, a highly prized street drug, was found behind a vacant hotel in Killeen Tuesday night, police said.

The backpack was found around 10:30 p.m. by a security guard who was patrolling around the former Howard Johnson Inn, 803 E. Central Texas Expressway, said Carroll Smith, spokesperson for the Killeen Police Department.

A hazmat crew was called in to collect the meth ingredients, which can be highly volatile. The backpack was found outside, behind the hotel, and there was no sign the empty hotel had been broken into, Smith said.

Police are still investigating the case, Smith said.
