Killeen's Executive Director of Public Works Jim Butler announced he plans to retire from his post April 29 after serving in the position since January 2005.

The city announced his departure Friday afternoon.

"It has been a very exciting time in Killeen," Butler said in a prepared statement. "We've seen huge growth in the city and significant growth in public works staff and programs."

Butler, 70, began working as a water sewer project engineer in 2001 and was promoted to city engineer within a year.

"Jim's leadership in our organization has been tremendous," Interim City Manager Glenn Morrison said. "His experience will be difficult to replace, but we wish him the best in his well-deserved retirement."

Before joining the city, Butler worked as chief of engineering plans and services in the directorate of public works at Fort Hood for 23 years.

Killeen spokeswoman Hilary Shine said Butler and his family will remain in Killeen, where they have lived since 1976.

Shine said Butler wants to spend more time with his family and more time doing community service. He turned in his resignation March 9, giving a month's notice about his retirement.
