COPPERAS COVE — Fire Chief Burney Baskett is no longer with the city’s fire department.

According to Kevin Keller, the city’s spokesman, Baskett’s last day of employment with the department was Feb. 13, just eight months into the job.

Baskett accepted the job in June 2013 after the former chief, Sean Hughes, left in October 2012, only five months after he was hired.

Keller said the city does not discuss personnel matters, so it is unclear if Baskett was terminated or resigned.

The Killeen Daily Herald submitted a freedom of information request to find out if Baskett was released or fired and the reason for termination.

A new posting for the fire chief job on the city’s website opened Feb. 19 and will close March 19.

The interim chief is Mike Fleming, a 28-year veteran of the department and city marshal.
