Early voting began Monday in Killeen with a sharp decline in turnout from the election in 2012 that largely shaped the current makeup of the Killeen City Council.

Only one district in Killeen, District 3, has a contested election. Redistricting has forced two incumbents, Terry Clark and Mike Lower, to face off against each other.

However, all residents are eligible to vote on 33 amendments to the city charter.

On Monday, 68 voters went to the polls. It was a decline of about 75 percent from the first day of early voting in 2012, a highly contested election that followed a politically charged recall of more than half of the council.

Killeen resident George Hendershot, who voted Monday, said he votes in all municipal elections and always votes early.

“It’s a convenience for me because I don’t want to stand in lines,” he said.

Hendershot said he was intrigued by the multiple proposed amendments to the city charter regarding the recall process.

The ballot has seven separate items all pertaining to the recall process.
