All four current district seatholders on the council filed for re-election Tuesday during the first day of the open filing period.

The incumbent district council members who filed for re-election are:

Shirley Fleming — District 1

Richard “Dick” Young — District 2

Jim Kilpatrick — District 3

Mayor Pro Tem Brockley Moore — District 4

The only candidate who filed Tuesday who is not a sitting council member is Kenny Wells, a former Killeen City Council member and businessman. Wells filed to run for the District 1 seat.

The filing period for the council election closes Feb. 17.

All candidates who choose to file as a candidate for one of council’s four district seats must fill out a ballot application form with Killeen City Secretary Dianna Barker at 101 N. College St.

City Hall’s regular business hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Candidates must live in the district they seek to represent.

All council members and the mayor serve two-year terms with a limit of three consecutive terms. All of the current district council members are serving their first terms.

The council’s three at-large members and the mayor are elected in even-numbered years.

Early voting begins April 24 and ends May 2. All Killeen residents within city limits must register to vote with the Texas secretary of state’s office before May 6.

Residents vote for the candidates who represent the district in which the residents live.
