HARKER HEIGHTS — Less than a week before the filing deadline, three people have signed up to run for two City Council seats up for election.

Stuart “Stu” McLennan III, a retired U.S. Army officer, filed for Place 1 on Jan. 30, the first day to file, along with Harrel “Hal” Schiffman, an insurance salesman. Mayor Pro Tem Pat Christ filed for re-election to Place 3.

Place 1 is currently held by John Reider, who is not eligible to run for re-election. He has served two consecutive terms and the city charter prohibits him from running again until he sits out a year, Assistant City Manager Patty Brunson said.

As of Monday, two others had picked up filing packets, but none had returned to file, Brunson said.

Friday is the last day to file for the May 11 election. Prospective candidates may pick up filing paperwork at City Hall, 305 Miller’s Crossing.
