Incumbents Susan Jones and Shelley Wells won re-election to their respective seats on the Killeen Independent School District’s board of trustees Saturday night, according to unofficial voting totals.

Jones was re-elected to the board’s Place 2 position, narrowly defeating local business owner John Gilmore. Wells, the current board president, defeated Fort Hood employee and former educator Lan Carter for the Place 1 seat.

Jones’ win Saturday night came after Gilmore took the lead in the early voting. After trailing closely behind Gilmore for much of the night, Jones pulled ahead late to secure her re-election. According to the unofficial voting totals, Jones won with 1,042 votes, just 14 votes more than Gilmore’s 1,028.

“I am delighted to continue working with fellow trustees and the KISD employees in providing our children with the very best education that our limited tax dollars can afford,” said Jones, who was first elected in May 2011 for an unexpired term. “I would like to thank all of those who came out and voted.”

While Jones said she was happy to win re-election, she said she was disappointed with the low number of voters who turned out to vote in Saturday’s elections.

“I am always saddened to see such low turnouts in local elections,” Jones said. Considering it is where your voice is the loudest.”

Wells won handily, with a total of 1,286 votes to Carter’s 773, according to the unofficial results.

“I appreciate the support of the voters,” said Wells, who has served as a member of the KISD board since 2007. “I will continue to work hard for the students, parents and taxpayers of the Killeen district.”

Board member Corbett Lawler, who was running unopposed, was re-elected to his Place 3 seat with 1,751 votes Saturday night.

The election results will not be official until they are canvassed and certified by the board later this month.
