Mayoral candidate Calvin Duane Sweet pulled out of the Kempner race two days ago, said Frances Spinney, the Kempner city secretary. Dropping out because of a new work conflict, Spinney said Sweet took a job that will take him out of the area too many times too feasibly hold the mayor's office.

Longtime Kempner Mayor Gene Isenhour will not be running for re-election. Serving as mayor for 15 years, he has held the position since 1999. His term ends in May.

Filing is open until Feb. 28 for the May 10 election.
