Bell County Water Control and Improvement District No. 1 will present Killeen City Council members with plans regarding the water treatment plant on Stillhouse Hollow Reservoir at today’s workshop meeting.

Engineers from both the city and the water district have been in the design phase for the construction of a new treatment facility on Stillhouse Hollow Lake, which will be a regional plant serving Harker Heights, Copperas Cove and other neighboring cities.

Killeen currently averages 16.5 million gallons of water per day, with peak usage around 25 million gallons.

The new plant would give the city an additional 10 million gallons per day.

In other action, the council will revisit developing masonry standards after the proposed ordinance failed to pass the council Oct. 8.

The council was caught in a stalemate with Mayor Dan Corbin voting to break the tie and reject the ordinance that would require residentially zoned houses be composed of 75 percent masonry on the first floor and 50 percent on the second floor. The ordinance also called for commercially-zoned buildings to be composed of 80 percent masonry materials.

Council members Jose Segarra, Wayne Gilmore and Mayor Pro Tem Elizabeth Blackstone along with Corbin expressed concerns over whether the proposed standards would drive up the cost of homes and keep businesses from locating in Killeen.

Councilman Steve Harris was absent from the meeting.

The council will meet at 5 p.m. today in the Utility Collections conference room, 210 W. Avenue C.

The council also will have a special meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday in the conference room to review and discuss the city’s future land-use map and thoroughfare plan.
