Killeen’s Water and Sewer Department is seeking a new home. City Council members seemed on board with authorizing the purchase at Tuesday’s workshop.
Scott Osburn, deputy city attorney, said the Water and Sewer Department has outgrown its current facility at 1901 Botanical Drive.
At the current location, every office is occupied and all warehouse space is being utilized, he said.
Parking is an issue at the Botanical Drive location with 25 to 30 employees having to park on the street during business hours.
Osburn said the facility lacks a training room and lab, which the department needs to operate effectively.
The city wants to purchase the former Elliot Electric property at 805 W. Jasper Drive. The electric company moved from that location in January 2012.
Osburn said the 1.25-acre property includes an 8,750-square-foot warehouse and two adjacent buildings with a combined size of 2,460 square feet. He said it has ample parking for city department employees.
Osburn said the property was appraised at $466,000; however, through negotiations between Elliot Electric and the city, the purchase price would be $435,000. The Water and Sewer Department intends to develop the property and parking area over a three-year period.
The redevelopment will include conforming the existing facility to have 10 offices, a training room, lab, meter shop and parking area.
Osburn said the total cost of the purchase and redevelopment is estimated at $767,000, which was budgeted in the city’s 2013-2014 budget.
The council will vote on the purchase at its 5 p.m. regular meeting Tuesday.
