The Killeen City Council will vote tonight on a request from the public works department to change the name of Sheila Drive to Lowes Boulevard.
Sheila Drive, which intersects Gateway Boulevard near H-E-B Plus!, is platted but undeveloped. Tony McIlwain said changing the conceptualized road’s name will reduce confusion and allow Lowes Boulevard to be an east-to-west corridor
“The public works’ transportation division is working on the widening of Trimmier Road, and in doing so we have an opportunity to designate an east-west corridor and rename it Lowes Boulevard,” McIlwain said. “In addition to branding that road with something that we think would be beneficial to the city, we think it lends itself to an opportunity where we can identify easily and reduce confusion as opposed to having it named Sheila Drive.”
Hilary Shine, city spokeswoman, said the Trimmier Road-widening project could begin as early as fall. As part of the project, Sheila Drive will be constructed to connect to Trimmier, eventually creating a second segment of Lowes Boulevard that will stretch from Florence Road to W.S. Young Drive.
McIlwain said renaming Sheila Drive is part of the city’s effort to “be a little forward thinking.”
“We think it will reduce confusion and be beneficial to have that Lowes Boulevard address,” he said.
The council will hold a public hearing and vote on the item at its 5 p.m. meeting today in the council chambers, 101 N. College St.
