GATESVILLE — The new countywide voting system, which let Coryell County voters cast ballots in any of 10 locations regardless of their home precinct, was “a huge success,” according to the county’s top election official.

“We had a very large crossover vote among the vote centers and overwhelmingly positive responses from voter surveys,” Tax Assessor/Collector Justin Carothers said.

The two polling places with the heaviest turnout Tuesday — the Gatesville Annex (446 voters) and Copperas Cove City Hall (306 voters) — were used mostly by voters casting ballots outside their home precincts — 73 percent at Gatesville and 76 percent at Cove, according to figures released by Carothers.

Voters in the rural areas of Oglesby (48), Turnersville (40) and Flat (56) voted in their home precincts by a wide margin — 99 percent, 99 percent and 90 percent, respectively.

Of the 1,589 voters on Election Day, 582 took a survey that was available at all the voting centers, Carothers said, with 95 percent reflecting “all positive” comments and only 5 percent with “at least one negative response.”

“The voting process was excellent,” said Edith Freyer of Copperas Cove. “It was nice to not have to go floating around. The voting place in our neighborhood kept changing” under the old home precinct system.

Casting her ballot at Cove City Hall took about 10 minutes, Freyer said.

The countywide system requires the use of voting machines and the few negative comments from the survey were about the loss of the paper-ballot option, Carothers said.
