Fort Hood officials released on Monday the name of a soldier who died Thursday after battling a serious illness at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.

Sgt. Charles Joseph Menard, 27, of Benton Harbor, Mich., was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, since June. He entered active-duty service in January 2004 as an air defense battle management system operator.

Menard deployed to Afghanistan from April 2011 to April 2012.

Menard’s awards and decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, five Army Achievement Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, three Army Overseas Service Ribbons, NATO Medal and Basic Space Badge.
