LAMPASAS — The Lampasas County Higher Education Center and IFR Flight Training School partnered to offer the first Private Pilot Ground School course beginning Oct. 14.

The course introduces students to a variety of topics required for private pilot certification and helps prepare students for the Federal Aviation Administration knowledge test required for certified pilots.

“We have never offered this course before, but we knew there was a dearth of pilots out there,” LCHEC chief operating officer Amy McDaniel said.

LCHEC contacted IFR Flight School owner Mark Wilson to see if he was interested in offering the program.

“Our world needs aviators, from Lampasas and everywhere,” Wilson said. “The important thing to understand is our pilot workforce is decreasing, and our world population is going up, so there is an incredible divergence, and air transportation needs are becoming a bigger part of our society.”

Wilson has provided flight training in Lampasas since 1972. He hopes the course will reach anyone who has an interest in flying, especially young people who have the desire to learn a skill, with or without pursuing an education after high school.

“Dreams come in big packages, so you can grow into them,” Wilson said. “All you have to do is get started and see if this is right for you. Flying is automatically fun and inherently exciting.”

The course instructor is Anthony Hicks, who is FAA certified as an airline transport pilot and a flight instructor and certified with single and multiengine aircraft and instrument ratings. He’s also certified as a ground instructor and an advanced instrument instructor.

The course cost of $350 covers tuition and textbook. Participants will receive a course completion certification.

Classes are from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.
