JoAnn Purser, a former member of the Killeen City Council, is back in local politics after unofficial results show she was elected to the Killeen Independent School District board.

Purser garnered 30 percent of the vote Saturday night. The Killeen resident beat four candidates for the Place 7 seat, which is occupied by school board president Ron Rainosek, who didn't seek re-election.

"I'm grateful that the voters have shown me a vote of confidence," said Purser, 49, who was with her family at the district's administration building to watch the election returns. "I will work very hard to make the voters and taxpayers proud and make good decisions for the children in our community."

Purser took the lead early in the school board race. As precinct votes were reported, her totals remained relatively steady, fluctuating between 29 and 30 percent of the unofficial results.

Her opponents included retired veteran Brockley Moore, defense contractor T.J. Carson, former teacher Lan Carter and Mi-Ok Doranski, who owns a Korean language newspaper.

Purser, a developer who has lived in Killeen for 37 years, served as a Killeen council member for District 3 but lost her re-election bid in May 2011. The election was held in the midst of a recall petition effort against the city council.

School board member Minerva Trujillo was re-elected to her Place 6 seat after running unopposed, according to unofficial election results.

The Killeen school district must canvass the votes before Purser and Trujillo are officially named board trustees. Canvassing is scheduled for May 21 at the district's administration building, 200 N. W.S. Young Drive.
