More than $113,000 was raised by individuals and teams participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event in Killeen on Saturday, event organizers reported Monday.
Although the number was quite a bit less than the $175,000 raised last year, donations will continue to roll in through August, said Amanda Charbonneau, community manager for the American Cancer Society.
“We’re very pleased with the outcome and happy that so many people came out to show support,” she said.
Although the temperature dipped to nearly 40 degrees late Friday, many of the 1,500 participants stayed through the night, Charbonneau said.
“It was a safe event, and other than the weather being less than great, I think it went really well.”
The Relay for Life committee has not begun planning for next year’s event, but Charbonneau promised improvements will be made in some areas, including the communication of registration fee information.
“There was confusion over the wrist bands and who was expected to pay the $10 fee,” she said. “We’ll have to fine tune that for next year and sort of streamline the process so that we don’t have any inconvenience next time.”
