Shoemaker High School students will have the chance to earn a full ride to two local colleges, thanks to a new scholarship fund.

Retired Gen. Robert Shoemaker and his wife, Tuke, presented a gift of about $600,000 to the Central Texas College Foundation for the establishment of the Wolf-Warrior Endowed Scholarship Fund at a ceremony Wednesday morning.

“General and Mrs. Shoemaker are indeed assets to this community,” said Robert Muller, Killeen Independent School District’s superintendent. “Their gift to the Central Texas College Foundation will benefit Shoemaker High School graduates for many, many years.”

The scholarship fund will pay full tuition for students to attend two years at Central Texas College and two years at Texas A&M University-Central Texas, said Judy Heartfield, the foundation’s director.

“It’s an endowment, meaning (the scholarship) will be given not just once, but for years to come,” Heartfield said. “It will live on forever.”

Speaking during the ceremony, Shoemaker emphasized the students the fund would benefit.

“This is not about us; it is about you,” he said. “It’s for all you young people here and what they are going to become.”

CTC is a two-year community college, which offers students the chance to earn associate degrees.

The college has worked with A&M-Central Texas, an upper-level, two-year university that offers bachelor’s degrees and graduate programs, to make transferring credits easier.

Shoemaker lauded the system as an accessible and affordable pathway for students to get an education.

“It fully meets the needs of this community, and there is nowhere else that these kids can get a bachelor’s degree of this quality for a low cost,” Shoemaker said. “It’s the best deal that I know of.”
