COPPERAS COVE — Scott & White Healthcare is investigating the possible construction of a clinic near the corner of U.S. Highway 190 and South Farm-to-Market 116.
An Austin-based firm, Big Red Dog Engineering and Consulting, filed both a preliminary and final plat for a 2.45-acre piece of property with frontage on U.S. 190 and South FM 116 on July 16. The site is between the Valero gas station, Clear Creek Meadows Apartments and Seoul Garden restaurant.
“The property was kind of left over from the parents’ tracts,” said Chris Stewart, a Cove city planner with Stewart Planning. “This was just kind of an unplatted remainder, so they have to plat it (before anything could be done to the property).”
Stewart said it is unusual for the city to do both preliminary and final plats at the same time, but because of its size, both platting processes were needed.
Scott & White spokesman Deke Jones wouldn’t confirm what the property was going to be used for, but said the health care system is investigating possible sites for future growth.
“As part of Scott & White Healthcare’s ongoing effort to provide quality care to the communities we serve, there is a process by which we identify areas for future use and development as our communities continue to grow,” Jones said. “This project is in a preliminary stage. As with any project of this type, it would be premature to share additional details. If, or when, the project develops into something more definitive, we will make the appropriate announcement to the community.”
However, according to the engineers application for the two plats, the health care system is looking at building a clinic on the site.
“A site development permit package proposing a Scott & White Family Medical Clinic on this site will be submitted in the near future,” stated the letter to the city from the engineering firm.
Stewart said a legal lot has to be defined before any entity can submit building plans to the city, and those would be reviewed separately from the platting process.
Stewart said the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Copperas Cove City Council should finish their review of the plat and accept or deny it within the next month.
