Construction of the build-out of a new Scott & White family clinic is under way in Harker Heights.

Scott & White leased a 9,100-square-foot building in Texas Heritage Park at 907 Mountain Lion Circle earlier this month to place a new family clinic in west Bell County.

"We (Scott & White) think it is going to be popular because of the heavy demand," Brent Blumenthal, Scott & White assistant executive director of regional clinics, said on Thursday. "It is in a new location which will be popular on the east side of town."

The facility will have the capability to house five providers – a combination of physicians and physician's assistants – for residents on the east side of Killeen and in Harker Heights, Blumenthal said.

The new clinic will have 12 examination rooms and an X-ray room, said Randy Russ, vice president of Bobby Castle Construction, which is handling the build-out.

Another room in the building will be the diagnostic laboratory for handling blood counts, strep screenings, pregnancy tests and more, Blumenthal said.

X-rays taken at the new facility will be featured in digital format, which will allow multiple doctors to look at the same X-ray at the same time in different locations, Blumenthal said.

This will be the third primary care clinic for Scott & White in the Killeen area, and it is coming after the great success of the other two clinics, Blumenthal said.

The main clinic at 3801 Scott & White Drive in Killeen offers services to about 420 to 500 patients a day, Blumenthal said.

The clinic at 1002 Wales Drive helps about 70 to 90 patients a day.

When it becomes fully staffed with its five providers and their support staff, the clinic should be able to handle about 100 to 120 people a day, Blumenthal said.

The construction of the build-out is expected to cost $650,000, according to information from Bell County officials. The permit to do the work was applied for and issued on Oct. 17.

With construction under way, Blumenthal is anticipating the clinic will open by late January, he said.

Scott & White is getting ready to open a new clinic in Salado on Monday, Blumenthal said. It has also opened up three speciality clinics this year in Killeen.

"We (Scott & White) have been really well-received in the Killeen marketplace ... and we want to respond to the demands in Killeen," Blumenthal said.
